Helsinki, March 20 – The Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Amy Pope, visited Finland on March 20, 2024. During her visit, she met with Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen, Minister of Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio, as well as the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Finland. 

The meeting agendas included discussing IOM's new strategic plan and its goals: saving lives and protecting people on the move, driving solutions to displacement and facilitating pathways for regular migration. The meetings also included discussions regarding the cooperation between Finland and IOM.

Director General Pope also visited the IOM Finland office in Helsinki and met with the staff.

Amy Pope is IOM's first female Director General and has worked in the position since October 2023. Prior to her current role, she worked, among other positions, as the Senior Advisor on Migration to US President Biden.

IOM is part of the United Nations System as the leading inter-governmental organization promoting since 1951 humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, with 175 member states and a presence in over 100 countries. IOM has had a presence in Finland since 1993.

IOM Finland works with migrants, authorities and civil society stakeholders on a broad range of migration issues. IOM Finland facilitates migrants’ integration, promotes development cooperation through diaspora engagement, provides assistance to victims of trafficking, and assists in refugee resettlement, family reunification and migrants’ voluntary returns. The operations of IOM Finland office cover Finland, as well as Sweden and Iceland.
